What's in it Wednesday
Astragalus Root | Shakeology

For this weeks What's in it Wednesday, I'm going to go over antiviral herb, Astragalus Root!

Astragalus comes from a type of bean or legume and has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. While there are multiple species of astragalus, most astragalus supplements contain Astragalus membranaceus which is said to come with numerous health benefits for several conditions, including heart benefits.
Astragalus seems to work by stimulating the immune system by its antioxidant effect that inhibits free radical production. In the body, free radicals damage cells and are associated to many health problems like aging. Unfortunately there is no known way to stop free radicals completely.

Here are some health benefits of Astragalus:
- natural dietary supplement
- used to treat the common cold
- used to treat upper respiratory infections
- used to treat fibromyalgia
- used to treat diabetes
- used to treat arthritis
- used to treat asthma
- used to treat nervous conditions
- lowers blood sugar
- lowers blood pressure
- may help protect against heart disease
- improves overall weakness
It is also used as an adaptogen, which is supposed to increase general resistance to stress and disease as well as normalize disturbances in your body’s ability to balance itself.
Astragalus has also been tested for the common cold, hepatitis, breast cancer and lung cancer. Some introductory studies propose a possible benefit but more medical research is needed to ensure this.
